I was able to attend the Lemur Conservation Foundation‘s open house yesterday, and it was all anyone could have hoped for and more. It was wrapping up as the sun was going down, so as we were all filing back to our cars, we could hear the red-ruffed lemurs doing their group-call to get everyone back to a communal roosting spot.
They’ve basically set up a little lemur paradise, with open forests for the bands to roam about and twice-daily feeding times to round out their diets and keep tabs on the animals. Research is non-invasive, and they’ve had enough success breeding new lemurs that they’ll be participating in an effort to refresh the gene pool in Europe’s zoos next year.
